Chromatius THE SHEPHERD
THE MAGI AND THE SYNAGOGUE
Chromatius, Holy Bishop of Aquileia from 388 to 408 AD, is a Father of the Faith and the Church, added to all effects in that context that troubled in the fourth century will determine the history of the Catholic Church, Apostolic and Roman Church to this day, making those choices today are perhaps too bold for granted, but in those dark years have been fruitful and result tearing and bloody fights, but supported by a faith maybe simple, but extremely determined.
L’autorevolezza che emanava non proveniva dal prestigio della cattedra episcopale, ma dalla sua persona, dall’attività catechetical which is a cornerstone of his episcopate, by the courage of her choices at times difficult and at odds with the power, on an incessant pastoral charity that exceeds the walls of Aquileia "E 'come down to us the reputation of your warm and sincere charity, Chromatius as much fanfare, has spoken out in clear and sustained at such a distance, it spread to the ends of the earth " (John Chrysostom, Letter to Chromatius).
It was distinguished for his patronage to support translation of various books of the Old Testament, but also ongoing work against the heresy of Arius, that he is the protagonist in the first person during the Council of Aquileia, 381, even when the priest takes, by delegation of the Titular Bishop Valerian, the word twice to confirm the faith of Nicaea (325) and Constantinople (381) and the bishops against Arianism members; Photinus, especially Arius, according to which the son of God would be a "creature" of the Father, and then would have a different nature, are always the attention of Chromatius that never fails to confirm the true faith in treaties and in sermons.
The purity of the true faith are the pillars of his apostolate.
to define his time, we can say that Chromatius lives during the springtime of the Church, just come out of hiding e dalle persecuzioni: trent’anni prima della sua nascita, terminava l’ultima persecuzione di Diocleziano che colpì in modo estremamente duro e sanguinoso la comunità aquileiese, quindi quando Cromazio parla di martiri e martirio non lo fa in modo astratto o di maniera, ma per l’esperienza diretta vissuta e tramandata dei suoi contemporanei, è il vivo ricordo alla radice della fede dei genitori o meglio della madre vedova che conduce una vita santa insieme alle sorelle vergini consacrate ed al fratello Giovino che Cromazio stesso ordinerà Vescovo insieme al quale ha vissuto una intensa esperienza monastica in Aquileia con Rufino, Girolamo ed il diacono, poi Vescovo, Eusebio, che nelle loro lettere ricordano con una certa nostalgia quella intensa esperienza vita comunitaria e monastica.

CROMAZIO ED IL SUO TEMPO
In pochi anni il cristianesimo è passato dalla clandestinità persecutoria al ruolo di religione di stato (380 Editto di Tessalonica dell’Imperatore Teodosio), con tutte le conseguenze del caso, legandosi da una parte al potere costituito dell’Impero romano da poco diviso tra Oriente e Occidente, con una serie di lotte intestine, usurpatori, scontro tra poteri, frizioni ed ingerenze che coinvolgono il principio della fede stessa, e dall’altra guardando verso una crescente massa di persone che si rivolgevano al Christianity for the conversion as the culminating and decisive act, as a true sign of the passage crosses the sacrament of baptism for Gentile converts is the real access to the Christian life.
While Chromatius held his sermons in the church of Aquileia, to carry out its catechesis and Catechumen competentes or imparts the sacrament of baptism in the hexagonal source of the baptistery, the pagans still frequented the temples of Jupiter and Mars , sacrifice animals for the wishes, the Jews read the scrolls of the Old Testament in the synagogues of the city.
Outside the walls of the city begin the first incursions of the barbarians, the Goths in 401 Alaric's the first time for besieging Aquileia, then again in 408, when he dies while Chromatius to rescue the population in the lagoon of Grado. The barbarians sacked Rome two years later, arriving in the destruction of Aquileia in 452 hands of Attila and his Huns, the year that marks the final decline of commercial, political and religious city. In this context
Chromatius work in difficult times, but where only a heroic adamantine faith can find the serenity and security which are permeated his writings, his homilies and catechesis., Where not apparent fear or uncertainty for the future, but only an unshakable faith, perhaps a bit 'naive in the light of historical criticism; with some forced interpretation, because everything had to come back, for everything was a perfect explanation in the Bible, even the natural contradictions or higher had their unique point of coincidence.
All this does not alter Chromatius man and bishop of his time, but contemporary and original precursor to the present day, man of broad culture and biblical knowledge, which also uses quotes quite unusual connections and foreshadowing that can sometimes seem a bit 'forced, but surely the result of a great faith.
The summary of his ministry, his preaching, his own priestly life could be summarized in these words: "Christ, true man, true God. "
Chromatius and Christmas
The celebration of Christmas, as his liturgical feast of the birth of the Savior, at the time of Chromatius was a relatively new holiday, it is only in 336 calendar liturgical dedicated December 25 as the date before Christmas was celebrated on January 6, as the Orthodox are still together Epiphany of the Lord and Exhibition at the Wedding of Cana (John 2, 1), Jesus' first miracle and Guidance Eucharist.
Chromatius 32 comments to the Sermon on the Gospel of Luke and Matthew's in the treaties, giving factual an extensive commentary to the two gospel texts that speak specifically of the birth of the Savior. The word Savior is not used as a synonym, but should be viewed in the light of vision and reading Chromatius that Easter is the birth of Christ, Christmas Announces Easter, the drama of the event and hope it is a very modern reading of the Gospel passages Chromatius that leaves us, which leads to the sacramentum, the mysterium fidei, the vigil that foretells the resurrection.

CHRISTMAS Chromatius
The plastic representation of the foregoing and reference books, has put quite a few problems to a realization that he was faithful to the text and spirit of the author and at the same time guided historical-theological-catechetical for us, also allowing a certain way in a rereading of the work in our current context. From
Against this background, the reading of sermons and liturgy of the Tractatus, a series of books and publications on Chromatius, developed the project idea, or rather those who could be the first stakes:
- the historical and environmental context;
- the ratio old and new testament, (1)
- the foreshadowing that announce the birth of the Savior;
- the announcement of the Creed of the Council of Nicaea and Constantinople;
- combating heresies;
- the relationship with the Jewish world and pagan
- the centrality of the sacrament of baptism;
- the absolute consistency and continuity in the biblical ... the evangelists do not write at random; From this background, the choice of environment is required: Aquileia and its basilica complex, embedded in a broader context that contains the story of Christmas with commentary by Chromatius.
The representation is therefore organized into two camps: the first sees the genealogy of Christ and the Annunciation, in a Palestinian area, the latter in turn divided into three additional scenes, events related to the Nativity, set in ' Aquileia Chromatius, the exterior of the basilica with the porch, the chapel of the pagans and the baptistry monument, under the facade of the basilica same, a second and third floor of Palestinian inspiration.
So we wait, and foreshadowing the announcement of the birth of Jesus, the historical event which gave a new dimension to all men and to the world and finally the universal Church in its mission of redemption and Easter.
Facts, figures, events and prophecies of the Old Testament are placed right in connection with facts, figures, events and prophecies of the NT. It 's a report that calls Chromatius shape (type, image, shadow) compared to the truth, the whole reality that is Christ. In other words with a visual image, it could be argued that the TA is like a big photograph of the NT, which is the reality (in person, thing, etc...) The NT is already present within the lines of the Old Testament, while not complete and not fully intelligible ... With this, the effect of the report in need, you should not think that the Old Testament loses its foundation in fact, incident, or that the characters of the Old Testament become evanescent. They retain their full thickness of facts, events and characters who worked in the past. Only that they are all really taken to mean greater and more excellent (introduction to the Treaty by Giulio Trettel, paragraph 5, New Town Publishing 1984)

genealogy of Christ and Announcements
In the Tractatus the bishop of Aquileia devotes ample space to comment on Matthew's genealogy of Christ, which introduces not only the historicity of the birth of the Savior but also his human nature, the expectation of all the people of Israel, makes clear that the time had come, that the proclamation of the prophets was fulfilled, meaning that the signs became visible to everyone.
Chromatius focuses on the fact that the evangelist neatly lists all generations, which distributes in groups of three, to make the principle of Abraham, the founder of the children for fourteen generations each, from Abraham to David, David Babylonian exile, from Babylon to Joseph, legal father of Jesus
Let 's start representation of the sole bid from pious and beloved son Isaac (Isaac is a type of Christ), which was awarded prefigure the mystery of the Lord's Passion in pro of mankind, the scene is classic, with Abraham looks at the worried young son Isaac, his descendants, who leads the donkey with wood for the burnt offering, the goat, caught in a bush, which is sacrificed for the alliance.
The fourteen sheep on the way to David are the generations and the people of Israel, David was hired to also predict, with the example of his person, in the shape of his reign and of his being a prophet, and the everlasting King the true prophet who is Christ. represented by the shepherd boy David and that looks to the Lord at his feet a root A shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow from its root. Shoot with the root of Jesse pointed to the Virgin Mary, which originates from the descendants of Jesse through David. In fact we have seen above that the Virgin Mary descend from the lineage of David: they are to testify The evangelist is that the Apostle. In Christ, Mary is popped from the flower of human flesh . Behind David his symbol, the star and the Temple that his son Solomon will build. From David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations are numbered. In fact, according to the Book of Kings, are seventeen, fourteen discarding those who become infidels generated by the dynasty of King Ahab and Jezebel, who will clash with the prophet Elijah.
L and fourteen generations are represented by a staircase, as written by Nehemiah: At the door of the Source, in front of them, went up the stairs the city of David, to climb the walls, above the house of David, and came to the Water Gate, east . (I 12.37)
Babylon is represented by the chains stuck on the wall and a scarlet woman by the clothes, according to the vision of 'Revelation (Rev 17, 1-6) *
From Babylon to Christ are thirteen generations, to become Chromatius fourteen for this reason that the evangelist was closely linked units in the birth and the birth of the Eternal Word in the flesh, that is from God and man, and do it together under two generations together together.
One might, however, wonder why Matt wanted to divide the forty-three groups of fourteen generations each.
In fact, the number of fourteen beautifully expresses the sum of the ten commandments of the Law and the four Gospels. The number expresses perfect harmony and unity of the Law with the Gospel.
The fourteen generations are therefore represented by the ten tablets of the law and the images of the four evangelists (taken from the pulpit of the Basilica of grade), according to the vision of Ezekiel, Chromatius taken from the Prologue to the Treaties.
The three cycles of fourteen are due to the perfection of the Holy Trinity, indicated equilateral triangle in the diagram which is a representation classica.Al center of the triangle shape of Aaron in priestly robe holding a staff in which you must see it announced Mary, who without mood of the earth, ie without seed man , was able to germinate ... the real mature fruit of human salvation. Maria then a descent through royal priesthood to Aaron and David, confirmed by the relationship with Elizabeth.
The genealogy of Christ is the link between the Old and New Testament, this passage is indicated by a large arch, an open door.
The Annunciation occurs within a typical Palestinian organized on several rooms that overlook a courtyard in a find Joseph in his shop, lit by a dim light, intent upon his work as a carpenter, a carpenter on the mountain overlooking the shop sign of the weight and responsibility on the part of the Angel, the Angel in the same court that appears to Mary announcing the descent of the Holy Spirit.
Mary is inside his room, without furniture in order to focus the attention on him, with reference to the pitcher in Marriage of Cana and his role of intercession. The ground floor, with typical rise of stone, while the walls are white candy, a sign of light, earth and sky, flesh and spirit dwell in Mary. In the background the image of Eve beginning of time the devil spoke to Eve first, then humans, so as to inject into them the seed of death.
Here, however, the first holy angel speaks to Mary, then to Joseph, to reveal to them the Word of life. In the first case, a woman was chosen to sin, but here is first choice for salvation. In the first case, a man fell because of a woman here rises to the merits of a virgin.
" Then one of the seven angels which had the seven bowls came and spoke to me: 'Come, I'll show you the condemnation of the great prostitute who sits by the great waters. With her prostitutes were the kings of the earth and the inhabitants of the earth have drunk the wine of her fornication. " The angel carried me away in spirit into the wilderness. There I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast covered with blasphemous names, having seven heads and ten horns. The woman was clothed in purple and scarlet, and decked with gold, precious stones and pearls, holding in his hand a golden cup full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication. upon her forehead was written a mysterious name "Babylon the great, the mother of prostitute e degli abomini della terra».
The baptistry is also a call to the washing of feet, Abraham and Gideon washed the feet of the Lord for the sanctification, the Lord instead washed the feet of his disciples to be sanctified but not to sanctify. They washed the feet of the Lord to clear your sins, he washed his disciples' feet to cleanse us from every stain of sin.
Elia image of Christ
In Elia, who suffered the persecution of Jezebel, wicked woman (cf. 1 Kings 19.1 s), alludes typologically to the Lord who endured persecution by part of the synagogue and secular women. He has never been contaminated by fleshly things and not only do not they have been offended, but was transported to heaven.
Sermon 25 d) - Attributes: wagon wheel ascent to heaven, where vessels with wet challenge in the holocaust against the priests of Baal, a prefiguring of the four gospels
Samson the Nazarite - Nazarene
Our Lord and Savior was called "Nazarene" is the name of the place, that is, from Nazareth, is the sacrament of the Law were called Nazarenes, those who with a vow to God offered their chastity; letting her hair grow on their heads ..
also agreed to Samson, the name of Nazareth for another reason: because it was powerful man in spirit and strong in courage, do not occur in a struggle to figure examples anticipation of the Lord. Samson had a seven-hair braids, and Christ has a sevenfold spirit and belong to the seven churches. All the strength of Samson was in the head, all the strength of the Lord is God in Samson vigor was hidden, but is hidden in Christ's divinity. Samson tore a lion in two also our Lord and Savior on the cross when he stretched out his hands, tore that lion who is the devil ... From the mouth of a lion Samson took out a honeycomb, and the Lord snatched from the jaws of the devil's own people, so that by faith it was tasty as honey.
Samson, locked the city gates, is locked up inside, even the Lord is closed within a sealed tomb. ... Samson, broken locks the doors and took upon his shoulders and walks away comfortable and the Lord, fully free, it removes the power of death, break the barriers of hell home and opened the tomb, their minds taken over pari- body.
Tractatus VII - Attributes: chains on their wrists, the gates of Gaza
Abel foreshadowing of Christ
Abel was a shepherd. Foreshadowed in itself an example of one who in the Gospel says: "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep "(Jn 10:11). In Abel ahead of the picture, because in Christ manifests the truth. The first is the pastor of the earth, the second pastor of the sky. The first is the pastor of animals, the second pastor of the martyrs. The first one is a keeper of sheep deprived of reason, the second is a shepherd with reason.
Sermon 32 a) - Attributes: Roman tunic, wreath
The Sign of Jonah
Therefore he could say that in the future, on the day Judgement, the people of Nineveh would rise to condemn the Jewish people, since only one listening to the people of Nineveh's prophet lent faith and therefore did penance while since he had not made any sign, while the people of the Jews would not listen to a bunch of prophets who foretold the coming of the Lord agreed,
Jonah was sent to preach to Nineveh, has to bear the storm of the sea, even the Son of God, sent by the Father to proclaim to mankind's salvation, has to face the persecution unleashed by the Jewish people. In that case, the wind rose up against Jonah and all the waters in this case the evil spirit raises the populace against the Lord. Moreover, as the ship on which Jonah was, after he had unleashed the storm, was tossed to and fro by waves opposite, so the synagogue, which was the Lord, was driven by many different unclean spirits to overwhelm to the risk of incurring the risk of death.
But as Jonah could not be devoured by the whale, or be retained as long as I live in his heart, so even death voracious but has swallowed the Lord, but because it could not hold in the living and the one that can not be circumscribed, rejected him out of the third day, as did the whale with Jonah.
The cetacean, swallowing Jonah, just threw him in death, however, has swallowed the Lord, not only him, but many rejected with him.
Tractatus 32 a) - Attributes: dress blue sea, arbor pumpkin sign of resurrection
Joseph Christ figure
Il servo viene sold at higher price of the Lord .... If we had been rescued from death with gold or silver, our redemption would have little value, because the man is worth more than gold and silver, but we have been redeemed with a price incalculable, invaluable because it is the one who redeemed us with his passion.
Joseph bears the slander of a woman unchaste, the Lord has often been made the object of slander by the synagogue. Joseph endured the pains of imprisonment, the Lord has endured the passion of death.
Sermon 24 c) Attributes: multicolored robe
Chromatius THE SHEPHERD
Outside the porch an angel announces human birth of the Lord, first, to the shepherds who watch over their flock. To no one but you know it was for the shepherds to the birth of the first prince of the shepherds. Of sheep, in a spiritual sense, are the bishops of the Churches, who guard the flocks entrusted to them by Christ. We are always vigilant in the faith of Christ and the precepts of the Lord, guard, as is proper, the flocks entrusted to us by Christ and are rightly called the pastors of the Church.
Chromatius then guide the flock entrusted to you, now composed of five sheep that symbolically represent the five continents of the leading bands in the neck with the symbolic colors of the continents themselves. The sheep are also the Church which has different and varied gifts: he has the martyrs, confessors (of faith, witnesses, and the blessed saints) has priests and ministers, has virgins and widows (those who have devoted their lives to God and widows sign of poverty and marginalization), has legal professionals. But this variety of the church is not a variety of colors, but a variety of gifts, this variety of its Church our Lord and Savior shines like a colorful dress and precious . (cf. as Joseph). fact the child is wrapped in multicolored bands; was wrapped in swaddling clothes, because he took upon himself our sins like a band, as it is written: He takes our sins and suffering our stead. He, therefore, was wrapped in swaddling clothes, to strip us of the bands of our sins, he was wrapped in swaddling clothes, weaving through the Holy Spirit, the precious robe of his Church, and certainly was wrapped in swaddling clothes, to name the different peoples of those who believe in him. In fact, different nations have come to faith and surround Christ, so to speak, with bands that once we were we age, but now, now, we have become the precious robe of Christ.
The precious garment of Christ, spotless robe of the Church, is placed over the crib, leaning on the cross.
At no other time have been washed the feet of our souls have been purified or the steps of our spirit, if not when the Lord took off the robe, then, just when on the cross put down the robe of the flesh who had assumption, which was covered, it is true at birth, but which undressed in his passion. And he took off the robe of his flesh to cover le nostre nudità.
Nell'albergo è indicata la Sinagoga, che, già occupata dall'errore dell'incredulità, non gained for the reception of Christ. Rightly refers to the synagogue in the hotel, because, as people visiting the hotel of any kind, so the synagogue has become the hotel of any disbelief and every error, so Christ could not find the place.
The empty synagogue is represented behind the Magi, in a scene which also refers to the Court of Aquileia, who shortly after the death of Chromatius find its destruction. The Magi are compared with the Synagogue it could recognize the Savior's birth through the sign of a star. First it must be said that it was a gift of divine condescension. In the second place in the books of Moses we read of Balaam, who was something of a prophet to the nations. But here is the condemnation of the Jews. The magi lent faith to the only prophet that they had, the Jews did not believe even for a large number of prophets. The wise men sensed that with the coming of Christ, would end the spells of magic, the Jews would not even understand the mysteries of divine law. The magi admit a foreigner; the Jews do not recognize one that belongs to them.
Presented therefore their homage, the Magi are warned not to return by King Herod. They went back to their country along a different route.
Here is an example to us of faith and purity, once known and adored Christ the King, there is the invitation because we leave the old road old error, because we walk in a new way in which Christ will guide you, and why we can return to our homeland, that is, the paradise from which Adam was expelled.
