Forse non tutti sanno che le origini ed il termine presepio hanno radici ben antiche, di matrice etrusco - latina, sono una consuetudine pagana che non è stata assorbita nel processo di cristianizzazione del mondo, così come è avvenuto per altre festività.
Nasce dalla devozione per i larii, gli antenati defunti protettori della famiglia raffigurati con statuette di vari materiali, poste nella casa, chiamate sigillum; in occasione della festa Sigillaria (20 dicembre) i parenti si scambiavano in dono i sigilla dei defunti dell’anno, mentre i bambini disponevano le statuine in un piccolo recinto che rappresentava un ambiente bucolico.
